Celebrating the 199th Anniversary of Uruguay’s Independence at the Monument of General José Gervasio Artigas in New York

On August 26, 2024, a special commemoration took place in New York City to celebrate the 199th anniversary of Uruguay’s independence, at the Monument to General José Gervasio Artigas in Spring Park, located at the intersection of Sixth Avenue and Spring Street, Manhattan.

The event was attended by several high-ranking personalities and consular representatives, including the Consul General, Minister Beatriz Nuñez Rivas, and the Consul Gustavo Avellanal. Also present were the District Consuls, the Uruguayan Ambassador to the United Nations, and the Military Attaché to the UN, Colonel Mauricio García, along with consular representatives from several Latin American countries.

The ceremony began with the singing of the Uruguayan National Anthem, followed by a floral offering from the Uruguayan Consulate in honor of the National Hero, General José Gervasio Artigas. In her speech, the Consul General, Minister Beatriz Nuñez Rivas, shared heartfelt words about the significance of the day, the pride of the Uruguayan community abroad, and the enduring legacy of Uruguay’s Independence.

In addition to the formal and solemn ceremony, the event included a cultural highlight with tango performances by the talented singer Fernando Pirez Lenzuen, who captivated the audience with his passionate renditions of this beloved Uruguayan genre.

The event was a moving tribute to Uruguay’s history and a moment of unity for the Uruguayan community in New York, reaffirming their strong cultural ties while celebrating nearly two centuries of independence.
