Picnic Celebrating Uruguay’s 200th Anniversary of Independence

Fundación Casa Uruguay celebrated Uruguay’s 200th anniversary of independence with another Bicentennial picnic, bringing together the Uruguayan community and friends of many different nationalities.

We were honored by the presence of Uruguay’s Consul General, Mrs. Beatriz Núñez Rivas, who addressed a few words to those in attendance. The event also included the entrance of the Uruguayan and American flags, carried by flag bearers dressed in the traditional Uruguayan primary school uniform, represented by children Mia, Belén, Alex, and Lucas.

Music was provided by Fernando Pirez, Uruguayan tango singer; Pablito y su Latin Show, with cumbia and Uruguayan tropical rhythms; Argentine singer Mariela Marcó, with tango and folk music; Marcos Pérez on percussion; Sofía Kaufmann, Uruguayan tango singer; and Maryta Cumbia, Uruguayan singer known for tropical and cumbia music. Our traditional candombe music was also present, with drummers and dancers Daniela Clermont and Edith Miranda.

With an attendance of nearly 400 people, there were games for children and adults, a truco (card game) tournament, bocce ball, and raffles with prizes. These gatherings strengthen our ties to our homeland and allow us to share our culture with the world.
